The Founder
Sonal Athwani is the visionary force and culinary soul behind Sage. Her journey is a compelling story of passion, resilience, and the entrepreneurial spirit. She began her career in 2003 in Pune, building a successful corporate catering business from a simple tiffin service. Faced with the difficult choice to leave her success behind and relocate to Kolkata in 2009, she refused to be defined by the setback. Channeling her unwavering love for food and an indomitable will to succeed, she started anew, culminating in the creation of Sage Bistro and Bakery in 2022.

How it all started
A Taste of Success
My journey began when I shifted to Pune. With a passion for cooking, I started a simple tiffin service, building a loyal customer base one meal at a time. My hard work soon paid off, and I transitioned into large-scale corporate catering, serving companies like BMC Software, Ventura, and Calsoft.
The Call Home
Life had other plans. A family calling required me to move back to Kolkata, forcing me to leave the successful business I had built behind. Handing over my passion and my hard-earned reputation was a significant setback, and I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of what the future held.
A New Chapter
Returning to Kolkata, I refused to let the setback define me. The thought of not working was unbearable, so I channeled my entrepreneurial spirit into a new venture. I started a cloud kitchen, a different model but one that allowed me to get back to what I loved most: cooking and creating.
The Rise of Sage Bistro
From the cloud kitchen, I took the next leap of faith and opened Sage Bistro and Bakery. Despite challenges and societal pressure, the obstacles only fueled my determination. I poured all my energy into creating a place that was not just about food, but about resilience, passion, and the courage to start over.
Restaurant Rebranding
To elevate the Sage experience, we embarked on a complete rebranding. This included a new logo, color theme, and website to reflect our evolving vision. We introduced a completely revamped menu and brought never-before-seen beverages to Kolkata, shifting our focus to a truly premium service model.
